WHAT SIZE WEDDING DO YOU WANT?
Unless your budget is big enough to fly all of your friends and family out to the country you've chosen to get married in, the fact is that getting married abroad will probably mean having a small, intimate ceremony. Even with the best will in the world, not all of your friends and relatives will be able to afford either the time off work or the airfare and hotel bill that a foreign wedding entails.
For some couples, this is the ideal situation to be in. If you're dreading the thought of a huge wedding with lots of people in attendance, then getting married abroad may be a wonderful alternative.
On the other hand, if you have a large family and would like them there with you on your big day, you may be disappointed when the "Sorry, we're unable to attend" cards start flooding in. An increasing number of couples deal with the inevitable disappointment to both guests and themselves by having their marriage itself abroad, and then throwing a party upon their return to enable them to celebrate with all of the people who couldn't be there at the ceremony.
HOW MUCH CONTROL DO YOU NEED?
When you're getting married in another country, many of the arrangements will have to be made on your behalf - normally by a wedding coordinator employed by either your travel agent or the venue. For some brides-to-be, this arrangement is heaven itself: all they have to do is pick the dress, turn up and enjoy the day. For others, however, the lack of direct involvement in the planning of their big day can seem like a nightmare.
Thanks to the Interent and the good old telephone, of course, it is possible to plan your wedding from another country, and be involved in all of the decisions being made, but you will do so at a distance, so make sure you're comfortable with this before you book your plane tickets.
