For Mother's Day we have no end of choices for gifts - from traditional chocolates and gifts sets, to more inspired pamper days and meals out. When it comes to poor old dad, though, the choices suddenly seem much more limited, which is why father's around the country will be waking up on June 18th this year to socks, hankies, and, if they're lucky, maybe a bottle of whisky and some cigars.
So what do you get for the dad who has everything? Well, let's start by looking at why we celebrate Father's Day in the first place.
THE HISTORY OF FATHER'S DAY
Father's Day started in America, in 1909, when a woman called Sonora Dobb, who had been raised by her father following her mother's death in childbirth, decided that father's should have a special day too, just as mother's did. Then-president, Calvin Coolidge, agreed, and the first father's day was held in June of that year - Mr Dobb's birthday.
It's been with us ever since, but we still never seem to get it right. Until now, of course. Here are some Father's Day gift ideas with a difference.
FATHER'S DAY GIFTS
Yes, we know it's the women in our lives who usually take delivery of scented, pampering products at birthdays and other celebrations, but dad's need some pampering too, you know. Bitsnstuff's Special Dad Bath Oil comes with Bergamot and Sandalwood, to refresh and uplift: now there's a nice thought for all of those weary fathers out there!
Of course, if you happen to be the mother of small children, you already know that you'll be doing the buying for their dad as well as your own. The ideal gift from the kids? Football and golf towels, customised with an "For Daddy" message, plus your child's embroidered foot or handprint. For an extra special touch, have the children deliver dad's gift while he's soaking in a long, hot bath: another Mother's Day tradition that works just as well for fathers!
FATHER'S DAY CARDS
What does Dad like to do? According to most card-makers, all dads like golf, fishing, beer and fast cars - although not necessarily all at the same time. If your dad is different, though, choose a card more appropriate to his interests - or better still, make him one yourself. Handmade cards are one of the more thoughtful gifts you can give, and they're easier to make than you may be thinking. Most craft shops will sell you everything you could possibly need for the perfect Father's Day card, or just get inventive with what you have around the house.
Of course, if your dad does like gold, fishing and fast cars, your gift shopping is easy! Bitsnstuff have everything the golf fanatic could possibly want, for example, with everything from golfer bath oil to executive golf toys, and even golf-themed cufflinks.
For the dad who likes to socialise, meanwhile, beer may be a little bit much, but why not try a bottle of champagne, cognac or brandy, presented in a special box, complete with newspaper from his day of birth.
