Planning a baby shower Baby showers used to be found mainly in Northern America, but it's a trend that has started to catch on in the UK , and across the rest of the world, too. It's easy to see why: the arrival of a new baby is something that people want to celebrate - so why not celebrate together?
What is a baby shower? Quite literally, a baby shower is an opportunity for friends and family of an expectant mother to "shower" her baby with gifts. They're normally held before the baby is born, and typically towards the end of the pregnancy, when the parents will have passed those anxious, early few weeks, and will be starting to stockpile baby equipment ahead of the new arrival. They may even know the baby's sex by then, and have picked out a name.
Who should hold one? Traditionally, a baby shower isn't thrown by the parents-to-be themselves, but by close friends of the family. This is partly a matter of etiquette (the new parents and their family won't want to look like they're asking for gifts) and partly because, in the final few months of pregnancy, the mother-to-be may not feel up to the task of organising a party.
Who's invited? Most baby showers tend to be women-only affairs, with the expectant mother's friends, family and co-workers in attendance. There are no "rules", however, and some people prefer to invite both men and women, while some proud father's will even hold their own "Daddy's shower", although these ate much less common?
What happens at a baby shower? As well as the giving and receiving of gifts for the new baby, baby showers normally include some kind of party games. Guessing games are particularly popular, with games like "Guess the baby's birth date", "Guess the mother's girth" or even "Guess the flavour of baby food", in which participants sample different flavours of baby food and try to guess what they're eating. Activities are limited only by the participants imagination - and, of course, by the expectant mother's mobility!
Some kind of refreshments are usually served at the shower, and guests may provide party food as well as bringing along a gift.
What to buy the baby Speaking of gifts, what should you bring? While the main purpose of a baby shower is to provide gifts for the baby, you may wish to buy something for the mother-to-be, too. There are lots of different maternity treats available these days which will make a lovely, pampering gift for the expectant mother.
Don't forget dad, either. With men continuing to take a more active role in their children's lives, fathers-to-be can also be included in the round of gift-giving. How about some new dad cufflinks or some 'Special Dad' bath oil, to stop him feeling stressed?
Finally, the baby! Here you'll find yourself spoiled for choice, with everything from clothes, to toys to baby food to buy. Many people attending a baby shower like to choose something the baby will be able to keep: sterling silver or personalised gifts are good choices in this respect, or how about a filled keepsake box in blue, pink or neutral?
