Cedarwood Essential Oil (5ml) Cedarwood Essential Oil (5ml)

Cedarwood (Cedrus Atlantica)from the “tree of eternal Life” is of the most underused oils in the Aromatherapy portfolio. It has a deep, heady aroma with a hint of freshly chopped wood and crushed leaves. Its colour is golden and its texture is thick and viscous but without the sticky syrupiness that characterises sandalwood. Cedar wood has been treasured by almost every civilisation. Solomon’s temple was made of cedar wood as were the doors of the Egyptian tombs and even today documents of historical importance are still protected within the protective insect proof walls of cedar chests. Cedar wood doesn’t just preserve paper it has a protective preservative effect on the skin and its scent is long lasting, hence its historical use in skin preparations and perfume. I find it very helpful in the treatment of dermatological disorders of the scalp when blended into a fragrance free shampoo with tea-tree and it can also be very helpful in relieving the symptoms of respiratory disorders from a simple cold to bronchitis. I have also used it with great success on clients who have serious problems with insomnia. Cedar wood can in some instances work where Lavender or Chamomile fail. The GP should always be consulted if the illness is serious).

Professional Tip
Cedar wood is a base note and fixative ie when blended with other oils it lengthens the life of the scent. It adds character and depth to any blend but works particularly well with Lavender. Cedar wood is inexpensive compared to the more famous base notes of frankincense and Sandalwood. I recommend that students who need to practice blending endlessly and carry out the maximum number of massages that they can substitute Cedar wood for Sandalwood. It enables them to gain maximum experience whilst staying within their budgets. My favourite blend with Cedar wood for the bath or the burner is Cedar wood, Bergamot and Green Mandarin with bergamot making up the body of the blend.

SAFETY NOTE
Opinion is divided as to whether cedar wood is safe in pregnancy. If in any doubt avoid.

Fennel Essential Oil (5ml) Fennel Essential Oil (5ml)

Fennel (Foeniculum Vulgare)from the latin word Foenum meaning “hay” because of its fresh scent and it historical application as a tonic used in animal fodder for the most valuable beasts. It wasn’t just used as a tonic for animals, the seeds were chewed by Greek athletes and Roman Gladiators to give them strength and courage. Medieval herbalists used to hang sprigs across doorways to prevent the spread of infection and protect against witch craft whereas the Victorians used it to calm digestive complaints and clean the teeth (it is still a common additive in toothpaste).

A good aromatherapist will in my opinion consider these historical anecdotes and experiences when treating clients in the modern clinical environment. I certainly would include fennel within the treatment regime of someone who is suffering from the very common condition of stress related irritable bowel or someone who is depressed by seemingly insurmountable challenges ahead.

Fennel can also be helpful for some clients in terms of regulating menstrual cycles (an essential pre-conceptual requirement) and it is also commonly used for the less serious problems of water retention and cellulite.

Being close to Newmarket I am also regularly involved in animal aromatherapy and I have had excellent results combining chamomile with fennel to calm horses and dogs prior to travel or competition.

Fennel has a wonderfully uplifting fresh aniseedy scent but its pungency can make it difficult to blend. It works well with most citrus oils particularly lime and it also adds an interesting note to most of the familiar blends that include Lavender.

Safety Note
Use in small amounts, spot test carefully prior to massage and avoid for the first 6 months of pregnancy.

Quantity:

Green Mandarin Essential Oil (5ml) Green Mandarin Essential Oil (5ml)

Green Mandarin (Citrus Reticulata) - This little known oil with its feminine citrus scent and floral tones shares many characteristics with Neroli. Indeed when students are training I suggest that they substitute green mandarin instead of Neroli. It is a good way of keeping costs down at a stage in ones career when one is unlikely to be being paid and the results are very similar.
I use this fabulously scented oil for clients suffering from exhaustion and those who are mentally and emotionally at a “low point”. It is gentle enough to use on children and is superb oil for "new Mums" and convalescents. It is a gently cheering oil which is ideal to “lift the spirits” especially when one is facing challenges either work related or perhaps hospital treatment or similar.

Professional tip:

Blend with Sandalwood and Lavender for a truly relaxing and memorable massage. If you need to come home from work and then change your mental focus for the evening ahead (perhaps evening paperwork or taxing leisure activities ahead) then use with frankincense in a burner. If you would like to make a relaxing perfume then select a top quality patchouli oil, a touch of petit grain and a dash of sandalwood. Then blend until you have the desired scent. Dilute with almond oil and don’t forget to spot test before application.

Lemon (Citrus Limon) has long been respected for its ability to “lift the spirits” & is often recommended for stress related fatigue. Can be used by students or drivers to maintain concentration & stay alert. Has an affinity with the respiratory system & is a powerful antiseptic but care must be taken if the skin is sensitive.

Price:   £3.25

Quantity:

Lemon Eucalyptus Essential Oil (10ml) Lemon Eucalyptus Essential Oil (10ml)

Lemon Eucalyptus Essential Oil (Eucalyptus Citriadora) The powerfully penetrating scent of eucalyptus is familiar to all and this oil enjoys a formidable reputation as a powerful antidote to colds, flu and respiratory congestion. . Eucalyptus Globulus is the most common plant variety form which oil is extracted, however my advice is to seek out the more expensive and unusual lemon eucalyptus. This lemon scented version of the plant is an attractive alternative to the standard Eucalyptus. It has all the anti vital and antibacterial properties of common eucalyptus and it can clear the sinuses in seconds. However in respect of the quality and scent there is no comparison. The citrus overtones in the scent add a much needed lift to the oil and in a burner the scent is much more pleasant.

Julie's Professional Tip:

Remember to take particular care to test for skin sensitivity if you are massaging with any eucalyptus oil and avoid if pregnant. Eucalyptus is often used to help children sleep through colds and blocked noses, its stimulant action can be negated by adding chamomile in equal quantities.

Lemongrass Essential Oil (10ml) Lemongrass Essential Oil (10ml)

Lemongrass (Cymbopogon Citratus) is a wonderfully rich & pungent oil that energises the mind & body. Lime Essential Oil (5ml) Lime Essential Oil (5ml)

Lime (Citrus Aurantifolia) The scent of a good quality expressed Lime makes me want to grin – I love its character and its energy. No matter how tired I am I only need to smell the closed top of my lime essential oil and I am back on top. In aromatherapy it does much the same job as lemon but why use lemon when you can have the excitement of lime. It richly deserves its reputation for energizing the mind and body and it is particularly helpful for work related fatigue. It is very effective when used by students or drivers to maintain concentration and alertness. It also has an affinity with the respiratory system and I often find that I achieve positive results with asthmatics by using it in their treatment regimes.

Julie's Professional Tip:
Blend with Lavender and Myrrh for an unusual massage mix which lifts the mind and restores focus. Dilute with almond oil and don’t forget to spot test before application. . If you are driving or in the study then fill the ashtray or a decorative bowl with a couple of tablespoons of table salt (an excellent preservative with a level of density which prevents the oils from disappearing too quickly) and blend in 3 drops of lime, 1 drop geranium and the tiniest hint of Clary Sage per tablespoonful for a stress free and wide awake drive or study session.

Quantity:

May Chang Essential Oil (5ml) May Chang Essential Oil (5ml)

May Chang (Litsea Cubeba) May Chang known as an “Oil of Tranquility” is recognized for its powerful effect in terms of promoting physical relaxation and mental calm. It is recommended for those suffering from work related stress and the “can’t switch off” phenomenon. Historically the oil from this exotic plant has been blended with almond oil and used to perfume the body prior to meditation or prayer in order to impart a sense of strength, calm and mental clarity. I particularly like this oil because its warm almost musky lemongrassy scent is so wonderful to work with. It complements most of the middle notes (herbs and flowers) and works particularly well with Sandalwood or cedar wood. May Chang has a gentle pungency which can be helpful when you wish to cover the scent of an oil which is helpful to the client but not always appreciated in terms of scent. Tea – tree and Clary sage are two contenders.

Julie's Professional Tip:
Blend with Tea Tree and use in a burner in the home or office during those months when everyday infections are circulating. 1 drop of tea tree to every two drops of May Chang. Use Cedar wood , Lavender and May Chang in equal proportions in a base of almond oil for a massage prior to an important event or challenge.

Myrrh Essential Oil (5ml) Myrrh Essential Oil (5ml)

Myrrh (Commiphora Myrrha) - The precious oil of Myrrh has been treasured by almost every civilisation for over four thousand years. It is best known for its beneficial effects on the skin but it also has an affinity with the digestive system & it is believed by many to stimulate the immune system & is therefore very popular in winter.

Everyone has heard of it and as Myrrh is so commonly referred to alongside Frankincense. However practitioners tell me that it is the one oil that they always carry but rarely use. There are two reasons for this – firstly it is such a viscous oil that it can be difficult to use. I recommend taking the dropper out and dripping it into your blends using an orange stick or a similar disposable applicator. The other reason is that if the oil is kept cool (viscosity is therefore at maximum) and it can be difficult to actually smell the oil clearly from the bottle. This is particularly noticeable if you smell other more pungent oils first. The scent of the oil is similar in many ways to Frankincense but whereas Frankincense has a warm soft scent, myrrh can be described as cool and slightly bitter. If Myrrh is used on its own then there are few people who would admit to liking it and this makes therapists nervous about using it in massage blends. However blending is the secret to unlocking the beauty of myrrh and the results can be quite spectacular. It can be used as a base note or fixative with oils that have delicate scents and are easily spoiled by the heavy handed addition of other oils. Rose, Jasmine and to some extent Ylang Ylang are all enhanced by Myrrh. The other advantages of Myrrh are medicinal. Its reputation as an aid to wound healing was first recognised on the Crusade battlefields and in common with frankincense it can be extremely beneficial in treating respiratory complaints. The Victorians used it for treating bleeding gums and mouth ulcers. There is no doubt it was (and is effective) however if the bitter taste is to be tolerated it should be blended with peppermint or something equally palatable.

Julies Professional Tip:
It can be difficult to get into the habit of considering Myrrh which is a pity as it is such a valuable oil. In the first instance I suggest trying it a s a substitute for Frankincense. Once you gain confidence use it for creative blending and produce your own combinations – I am certain that you will be pleasantly surprised. My favourite blend using Myrrh is 2 drops of Frankincense, 2 drops of Myrrh and 2 drops of Golden Apple in a generous tablespoonful of almond oil for a heavenly hand and foot massage. If you are wondering what Golden Apple is it is orange sweet. Oranges were commonly known as golden Apples when they were first introduced to the British public.

Palmarosa Essential Oil (10ml) Palmarosa Essential Oil (10ml)

Palmarosa (Cymbopogon Martini) is rich exotic oil which combines fresh citrus tones with a warm comforting floral note reminiscent of a good geranium or ylang ylang. It is beneficial for nervous tension and stress related complaints and is helpful where one needs to stimulate the body and beat fatigue whilst calming the mind. I have also found it helpful for clients with stress related irritable bowel conditions. It originated in Constantinople where the wives of rich merchants for cosmetic skin preparations used it and indeed it is still used by aromatherapist today because of its positive effect on the skin. It is also believed to be cleansing oil and I regularly prescribe it for computer bound clients in a spray form to be used in the space between them and their computers before and after work.

Julies Professional Tip:
If using it as a cleansing spray add 4 drops per tablespoon of water and 1 drop of tea tree to add an antiseptic aspect remember to make the spray up fresh after three days and either shake well before use or use vodka to disperse the oil.

Peppermint Essential Oil (10ml) Peppermint Essential Oil (10ml)

Peppermint (Mentha Piperita) is believed to help improve concentration & clarity of thought. The name Peppermint is derived from the Latin word 'mente' meaning “thought” because the Romans used Peppermint as a tonic for the brain.

Quantity:

Petitgrain Essential Oil (5ml) Petitgrain Essential Oil (5ml)

Petitgrain (Citrus Aurantium) - This innocent and sweet scented oil causes considerable confusion because it shares its Latin name with Neroli. The reason fro this is that the oil is extracted from the same tree (the bitter orange tree) as Neroli. However Neroli is extracted from the blossom of the tree whilst Petitgrain is extracted from the buds, twigs and young leaves. One of the main differences is that the oil yield from the blossom is miniscule hence Neroli oil is extremely expensive whereas the oil yield from the leaves and twigs is much greater, hence Petitgrain is quite reasonably priced. Petitgrain like Neroli is widely used in perfumery with Petitgrain being a key ingredient in many colognes. Petitgrain is a balancing oil which relaxes the body whilst lifting the spirits. It has a particular affinity for the male psyche and can be extremely helpful in treating male depression and work related fatigue.

To many aromatherapy enthusiasts (myself included) oils have personalities as well as characteristics and I always consider Petitgrain to be like a “cheerful friend”. Undemanding, good to have around with the ability to lift the spirits. Unfortunately Petitgrain is rarely chosen as one of the key oils in aromatherapy training. It is a pity as it is an ideal oil for beginners as it smells good and it is so well balanced and delicately fragranced it never spoils a blend no matter how inexperienced the individual doing the blending.

Julies Professional Tip
Blend together Neroli, Orange Sweet and Petitgrain in equal quantities and then add a dash of Sandalwood to ground it. Use in a burner (or assuming sensitivity tests have been carried out first) use in the bath for the ultimate citrus experience. There is something quite magical about bringing all the elements of the tree together. Almond oil is my preferred base oil for massage.

Spearmint Essential Oil (10ml) Spearmint Essential Oil (10ml)

I love the cool icy aura of Spearmint (Mentha Spicata) and its clean but complex scent. I see it as a “softer” alternative to Peppermint. Peppermint to me is strong masculine oil whereas spearmint has more of an affinity for the female psyche. On a practical level peppermint can be difficult to use in a massage blend or a blend for the burner because its menthol notes and pungency can easily overpowers the other ingredients the clean and gently uplifting character of spearmint offers a more sophisticated and subtle alternative. I also find that whereas peppermint can occasionally over stimulate the mind of someone who is overstressed and perhaps agitated spearmint can offer that mental boost without aggravating any mental hyperactivity. As well as being oil, which “lifts” the spirits and improves mental focus I also use it to counteract physical fatigue particularly where it is caused by mental stress. I feel that mint is a natural choice where there is any mental stress partly because the name mint is derived from the Latin word "mente" meaning “ thought” because the Romans used it as a tonic for the brain.

I love the cool icy aura of Spearmint (Mentha Spicata) and its clean but complex scent. I see it as a “softer” alternative to Peppermint.

Julies Professional Tip:
Use spearmint in equal proportions with a really good citrus oil (lime is my favorite) and just add the tiniest whisper of frankincense for depth and to “ground” the blend. Remember to take particular care to test for skin sensitivity if you are massaging with any citrus oil. Almond oil is my preferred base oil.

Sweet Almond Oil Carrier (100ml) Sweet Almond Oil Carrier (100ml)

This Almond Oil is a premium quality carrier oil which can be used on its own for moisturising or with essential oils as a massage medium. I personally prefer it to Grapeseed or any of the heavier oils because it sinks into the skin quickly & effectively, taking the essential oils with it.

As a result one can massage (even firmly) without uncomfortable friction or problems of hairs catching. Equally important however, is the fact that it is not slippery so the hands do not "slip" causing a tickling sensation which is irritating rather than relaxing.

Attractively packaged in "blue-glass" effect plastic bottle with a leakproof lid.

Each bottle of Almond Oil Carrier comes with full helpful instructions on how to combine with your chosen essential oil/s for massage.
