The week before Christmas is one of the busiest of the years as people rush to buy last minute gifts and make sure that Christmas runs as smoothly as possible. Wouldn't you prefer, though, to be able to spend that time relaxing with your family, in the true spirit of Christmas? By carefully planning your week, it's possible to reclaim Christmas and have the well-earned break you deserve.
SEVEN DAYS TO GO - BUY LAST MINUTE GIFTS
There's nothing worse than a last-minute present rush. The shops are hot, crowded and uncomfortable, and you'll end up spending more than you wanted to on something totally unsuitable. Use day seven, then, to pick up any final gifts and get them wrapped. It's a good idea to use this day to purchase a few generic gifts that will work well for anyone - boxes of chocolates and bottles of wine always go down well - and warp them up with the rest of the family's gifts. This way, you'll be spared any awkward moments when someone you haven't shopped for turns up laden with gifts.
SIX DAYS TO GO - FILL THE FREEZER
Food shopping in the run-up to Christmas can feel like completing an assault course, only twice as tiring as people slug it out for that last turkey or bag of brussels sprouts. Use day six to make sure your freezer and drinks cabinet are full - or be even cleverer and order in a Christmas hamper so there's nothing else to do but put the goodies away and sit back and relax.
FIVE DAYS TO GO - CHECK THE GUEST LIST
If you're having family or friends for Christmas dinner, now is the time to double check their attendance and ask about any special requirements such as food allergies. If you're having overnight guests, prepare their rooms in advance - you don't want to be spending Christmas Eve preparing the guest room!
FOUR DAYS TO GO - CLEAN UP TIME
It's a little late to be doing an in-depth clean, but if there's any clutter you can easily get rid off, now is the time to do it, before the house is filled with new toys and reams of wrapping paper!
THREE DAYS TO GO - GET BAKING
If you're going to be baking mince pies and other Christmas goodies, make a start today. Not only will you free up some time closer to Christmas, you'll also have a selection of baked goods to offer to your guests or enjoy with the family on Christmas Eve.
TWO DAYS TO GO - RELAX!
Feeling tired yet? The excitement will be building by now, so take some time out to watch some Christmas movies and enjoy the season.
ONE DAY TO GO - CHRISTMAS EVE
According to tradition, Christmas Eve is the day to put up your Christmas tree and decorate your home, although many families now choose to put up festive decorations earlier in the week. Decorating the tree can be a great way to spend the night before Christmas, though, and will help you wind down from work and get into the Christmas spirit, so put on some Christmas carols, open a bottle of mulled wine, and let the festivities begin!
